Position Description

The Department of Biology at Duke University seeks applicants for the position of Instructor B for the Microbiology (212L) lab sections. This course introduces major concepts in biology through the lens of microbiology. Classical and modern approaches to the study of microorganisms and their roles/applications in everyday life, medicine, research, and the environment. Microbial cell structure, function, growth, genetics, metabolism, evolution, and ecology. Study of disease, infection, and immunology. Laboratory includes students learning basic microbiology methods, microscopy, cell morphology, differential staining, PCR, electrophoresis, brewing, and food microbiology. Emphasis for students includes being able to isolate a pure bacterial, identify it over several weeks and communicate their methods and results via writing. The primary duty of the Instructor B position is to teach in-person lab sections and contribute to grading for lab and lecture. The duties include but are not limited to: Lead laboratory sections. Attend weekly prep meetings, assist with lab practical exam design and setup, grade student laboratory notebooks. Attend lecture two times per week. Grade lecture exams, teach two writing workshops, provide timely feedback on drafts for lab assignments, grade lab assignments for all laboratory sections.

The Instructor B is expected to teach five labs per year, with the equivalent of two to three lab sections during the semester, depending upon class enrollment. The successful candidate will have at least a Masters Degree in Biology or closely related discipline and some teaching experience.
