University of Ottawa, Chi Group

Position Description
Led by Prof. Hang Chi, the Quantum Electronic Devices and Circuits Laboratory investigates magnetic quantum hybrids for information and computation by synergistically combining ab initio simulations, crystal growth, film deposition, device fabrication and quantum transport (with 70+ articles in leading journals garnering 9,000+ citations and h = 40 on Google Scholar).
Prof. Chi’s group envisions to advance interface-driven magnetic, topological and superconducting materials and devices, leveraging state-of-the-art research infrastructures at the University of Ottawa, including AIXTRON MOCVD, MBRAUN Gloveboxes, ONWAY 2D Transfer System, and Quantum Design PPMS (14 T and 50 mK), with strong supports from Canada Research Chairs, Canada Foundation for Innovation, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, New Frontiers in Research Fund and U.S. Army Research Office.
The role:
A successful candidate is preferred to have a background in one or more of the following areas: (i) film deposition (MBE, CVD), (ii) crystal growth (flux, Bridgman, CVT), (iii) device fabrication (2D/moiré, e-beam/FIB lithography), (iv) magneto-optical-acoustic-thermo-electrically coupled transport.
Under the supervision of Prof. Chi and Chi Lab Postdoctoral Fellows, the successful candidate will thrive in the investigation in emerging magnetic materials, topological electronics and magnonics, superconducting or molecular spintronics, as well as bio-inspired quantum sensing.
Responsibilities include (but not limited to):
- Follow the program requirements and milestones in a timely manner
- Propose and lead the studies of novel quantum materials and devices
- Apply, when/if eligible, to relevant external scholarship opportunities
- Participate actively in preparing manuscripts, reports and presentations
- Mentor junior group members including undergraduate and visiting students
Qualifications:
Education – M.Sc. in relevant field.
Exceptional candidates with solely B.Sc. will also be considered.
Location:
The Chi Lab is located at the University of Ottawa (150 Louis-Pasteur Private, Ottawa, Ontario, K1N 6N5, Canada).
How to apply:
REQUIRED MATERIAL
- Cover Letter
- Curriculum Vitae
- Transcripts
- Research Statement (up to two pages)
- Contact information of two references
All the required materials should be combined in a single PDF and submitted to Prof. Chi (Hang.Chi@uOttawa.ca).
DEADLINE
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The official application is typically due on February 1 for Summer/Fall semester and September 1 for the Winter.
