Position Description
The Biology Department at Macalester College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the field of Molecular Genetics to begin Fall 2026. We welcome applicants with expertise in molecular genetics as a broadly defined field. The successful candidate is expected to teach our introductory Genetics core course and upper-level courses that support the Biology major, pre-health students, and students in related majors; additional teaching responsibilities will depend on the candidate’s interests and expertise. We seek applicants who have capacity and enthusiasm for working with a diverse student population, who are committed to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, who will develop an active research program that engages undergraduate collaborators, and whose research and teaching complements the College’s current strengths in molecular and cellular biology.
The Biology Department features state of the art facilities and equipment and each faculty member has their own research lab. Start-up funds, additional forms of institutional support, and a pre-tenure sabbatical leave policy are available. Support for pedagogy and scholarship is offered by Macalester’s Jan Serie Center for Scholarship and Teaching. The most qualified candidates will have teaching and postdoctoral research experience. At Macalester College, diversity, equity, and inclusion have long been central to our educational mission and values. We are committed to the institutional change required for visioning and realizing a more equitable and socially-just college and society. We ask all candidates to address the following in their cover letter (no more than three pages). Applications that include statements regarding all of the areas will receive strongest consideration:
- Specific interest in joining the faculty at Macalester College - why Macalester?
- Demonstrated activity and contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in your teaching, scholarship, service, and/or community engagement; experience and vision regarding teaching, advising, and mentorship of students of multiple and diverse backgrounds with attention to students who experience structural barriers and limited access to educational opportunities
- Experience and/or vision in teaching undergraduate students; include experience using inclusive pedagogy, active and innovative teaching strategies, and assessment of learning outcomes as applicable
- Contributions (scholarly and/or creative) to your research field; highlight professional engagement in the field and community engagement in local and/or global contexts
To apply to this position, please submit the following materials to Academic Jobs Online:
- Cover letter (see above for details to include)

- Research statement: a statement of your contributions to the scholarly field and future research goals. Highlight professional engagement in the field through journal publications, conference presentations, submitted and/or funded grant proposals, as well as ongoing publishable projects. Describe your current and immediate future research projects. The strongest candidates will have enthusiasm and a feasible plan for incorporating undergraduate students in their future research.
- Teaching statement: a statement of your experience in, commitment to, and vision for teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. Discuss pedagogical approaches (e.g., inclusive teaching, active and innovative teaching strategies, assessment of learning outcomes), future teaching development goals, and courses you’d be passionate to teach or introduce into the curriculum.
