Position Description

The Intercollegiate Department of Africana Studies at the Claremont Colleges invites applications for a one year visiting Assistant Professor who works and teaches at the interface of Africana Studies and Environmental Justice. The position is to be housed at Pitzer College and the successful candidate will be a member of the Africana Studies field group at Pitzer.

We seek a colleague in environment, ecology, human institutions, sustainability, climate change, or adaptation and the like. Preference will be given to candidates whose scholarship involves primarily quantitative behavioral research aimed at understanding individual and collective perceptions, decisions, and behaviors as they pertain to these topics.

We seek a scholar who will contribute to the department's mission of examining, through various academic disciplines, the knowledges, and experiences of people of African heritage worldwide. The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts teaching and show evidence of a productive program of scholarly research. The candidate is expected to work collaboratively in an intercollegiate setting.

The teaching load for this position is 5 courses for the academic year, and will include courses in the candidate's area of specialty, and possibly Intro to Africana Studies. Ph.D. or ABD expected by starting date. PhD open but preference may be given to those with degrees or certifications in Africana Studies or related fields. The successful candidate will have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving higher education for underrepresented students.
