Position Description

Dr. Jeffrey R. Vincent, the Clarence F. Korstian Distinguished Professor of Forest Economics and Management in Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment, is hiring a full-time postdoctoral associate to collaborate with him on research related to the economics of afforestation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The planned research includes three components: (i) a systematic review on survival rates in tree-planting programs; (ii) an impact evaluation of a large-scale tree-growing program in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and India; and (iii) an analysis of financial incentives for smallholder tree growing in Ethiopia. In addition to Vincent, the associate will collaborate with members of a research team already engaged in the systematic review mentioned in (i), staff at the program mentioned in (ii), and, for (iii), researchers at The World Bank. The position is funded by The World Bank and affiliated with the Nicholas School.

TERM 1 year, with the possibility of a 1-year extension based on performance and funding.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Applicants should hold a doctorate with advanced training in natural resource, forest, or environmental economics. They should have strong quantitative skills, including ones related to impact evaluation methods, discrete choice experiments, systematic reviews, and meta-analysis, with high levels of proficiency in associated software (e.g., Stata, R, Ngene). Applicants should have knowledge of development economics combined with field experience in LMICs, ideally experience in one or more of the five focal countries for the research (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, India, Ethiopia).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Basic proficiency related to geospatial analysis (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine). Strong oral and written communication skills. Experience working with and managing interdisciplinary research teams and using project-management software (e.g., Slack). Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

START DATE The position is available September 1, with a flexible start date.

WORK LOCATION Work takes place on Duke’s main campus in Durham, NC. The associate will have shared office space in Grainger Hall.

SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Benefits are offered in accordance with the Duke University Postdoctoral Policy.
