Position Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow.

Under general supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Enrique Lopez-Rodriguez, the primary work will involve analyzing and developing high-resolution cosmological magnetohydrodynamic simulations, including, but not limited to, dust properties, cosmic rays, and mock infrared and radio observations (i.e., ALMA, JWST, SOFIA, VLA, SKA). The ultimate goal is to characterize the evolution and role of magnetic fields and dust in galaxies and the circumgalactic medium over cosmic time.

Candidates must have a PhD degree in astronomy or a closely related field by the start date of employment. The successful candidate will have expertise in numerical magnetohydrodynamical simulations, galaxy evolution and formation, and extragalactic (including active galactic nuclei) astrophysics, which could have been gained during the normal course of a doctoral degree program. Candidates are required to conduct business lawfully and ethically by consistently adhering to compliance policies, procedures, and regulations.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at USC, a Carnegie Research 1 University, consists of 30 faculty members and is currently growing. Our main research areas are astronomy/astrophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, particle physics, and quantum physics. Further information about the department may be found at physics.sc.edu.
