Position Description

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, TECTONIC GEOLOGY The Pomona College Geology Department invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2026. Candidates with expertise in any area of Tectonics (broadly defined) are encouraged to apply.

We seek a colleague who will embrace field teaching and research in Southern California’s active tectonic setting to complement the department’s historic strengths in mineralogy and petrology, geochemistry, volcanology, geophysics, oceanography and sedimentary geology. Research areas may include, but are not limited to: neotectonics, structural geology, tectonic geomorphology, geodynamics, or other novel approaches to the study of tectonic processes. The department hosts robust analytical and computational facilities, which a successful candidate will be encouraged to employ in their research and teaching. Pomona faculty are expected to offer four courses per year, divided between two semesters of instruction. We seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment to developing challenging, undergraduate curricula and to mentoring undergraduate research. The successful candidate will offer structural geology annually, with other courses to be determined based on areas of expertise. The Geology Department recognizes the persistent barriers to access for women and peoples historically excluded in our field based on ethnicity or race. Pomona College is committed to increasing excellence through diversity and welcomes applications from women and members of underrepresented groups. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, all applicants will be reviewed in an equitable manner. We seek to provide the successful candidate with the resources to flourish in our unique environment. The College offers a competitive compensation package. The salary range for this position is $95,000-$105,000 and is commensurate with experience and years in rank. Application materials should include:

• A cover letter that addresses your interest in the liberal arts and Pomona College in particular, as well as how you envision pursuing your research and teaching interests at the College.

• A current curriculum vitae.

• A research statement, including your plans for involving undergraduates in research.

• A statement describing your teaching philosophy: describe principles, practices, or experiences that inform the way you foster an inclusive classroom where all students are encouraged to participate (typically 1-2 pages).

• A statement explaining how you would mentor a diverse student body.

• Contact information for three references.

Pomona College is a highly selective private liberal arts college with an enrollment of approximately 1700 students, all undergraduates, and a student/faculty ratio of eight to one. Recognized as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges, Pomona offers instruction in all major fields of the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, and is strongly committed to the value of a residential educational community. Pomona is the founding member of the Claremont colleges, a unique collection of five small undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions located in a spectacular tectonic setting of southern California at the base of the San Gabriel mountains, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Students of The Claremont Colleges can cross-register for courses at any of the colleges and have access to a shared library system containing over 2 million volumes. Pomona students thus enjoy the advantages of personalized instruction and close faculty-student interaction in a small liberal arts college setting, combined with the intellectual and extracurricular resources typically found at much larger universities.

Review of completed applications will begin on December 1.
