Position Description
The MIT History Section invites applications for two 2-year Postdoctoral Fellowships in Middle Eastern History offered as part of a new History of Now Initiative. These inaugural fellowships will run from July 2026 to July 2028. We seek outstanding junior scholars whose research engages Arab and/or Jewish History in the Middle East and North Africa, in any time period. We have particular interest in scholars working on Palestinian and/or Israeli history or the history of Jewish-Muslim relations. Position Details: -Full-time, two-year appointment; -Applicants must have received a Ph.D. in History (or a related field) within the past five years and no later than July 2026; -Fellows are expected to be in full-time residence at MIT during the academic year; -Each fellow will be assigned a committee of faculty mentors; -Fellows will have the opportunity to share work-in-progress with History faculty and convene a first-book manuscript workshop. Responsibilities: -Actively participate in the intellectual life of MIT’s History Section; -Present at least one public lecture at MIT during the fellowship term; -Teach one course per academic year, determined in consultation with the History faculty and aligned with both the fellow’s expertise and the Section’s curricular needs. Applicants should submit the following through AJO: -Cover letter; -Curriculum vitae; -Research statement (~1,500 words); -Writing sample (dissertation chapter or scholarly article); -Names of two recommenders (letters will be requested if the applicant advances). Compensation and Benefits: -Annual salary is aligned with the standard postdoctoral associate salary at MIT; -Eligible for all MIT employee benefits as described by MIT's Benefits Office.
