Position Description

Open rank instructor of Psychology, Cornell University

The Department of Psychology at Cornell University invites outstanding candidates with a passion for teaching to apply for an open-rank position as lecturer/senior lecturer. (Note that Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences has endorsed adoption of the titles of assistant/associate/full teaching professor; new hires will be eligible to be considered for this new title when it is introduced). Candidates will be prepared to teach courses in the area of clinical science to begin July 1, 2026. Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree and interest or experience in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate (MA) levels.

Position Responsibilities

This is a full-time teaching position. The candidate will teach up to a total of 6 courses across the two semesters of the academic year. The department offers a collaborative and stimulating culture and a competitive salary and benefits package. Teaching faculty play a full and active part in departmental life and work with other faculty members and our excellent students in a broad range of ways, such as teaching upper-level courses, working on curriculum design and innovation, advising undergraduate student projects, mentoring Ph.D. students interested in teaching careers, and participating in wider faculty governance and decision-making.

Courses to be taught

We expect the successful candidate to teach a mix of lower- and upper-division courses (lectures and seminars) as well as graduate-level seminars that cover topics in clinical psychology, broadly construed. Course size will vary, but candidates will be expected to teach at least one large service course on happiness. The department currently offers courses in psychopathology, developmental psychopathology, affective science, gender and psychopathology, and mood disorders; we encourage applicants whose expertise complements and expands on the department’s existing courses.  We will prioritize candidates whose courses emphasize clinical science, and an integrative biopsychosocial approach to mental health and intervention.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in clinical psychology or a closely aligned field completed by the date of appointment and a desire to pursue excellence in teaching. Licensure is not required but licensure eligibility is preferred.

Applications
Qualified applicants should submit 1) a cover letter briefly summarizing background, qualifications, and interest in the position; 2) a Curriculum Vitae; 3) a teaching statement that describes teaching experience, approach, and goals, and that documents past teaching effectiveness; and 4) names and contact information for three references who can speak to candidate’s teaching abilities and effectiveness. Up to three representative publications may be included but are not required.

Applications received by Nov 1, 2025, will be given full consideration. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. For questions regarding the position, please contact Search Committee Chair, David Pizarro.

Pay Range: $51,300- $95,000]

Actual salary offers in the College of Arts and Sciences will be based on education, experience, discipline, and relevant skills.
