Position Description
Assistant Professor
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),
Department of Chemical Engineering (https://cheme.mit.edu/) in Cambridge,
Massachusetts invites candidates for tenure-track faculty positions starting 07/01/2026,
or on a mutually agreeable date thereafter. Appointment will be at the
assistant professor level. In special cases, however, an untenured associate or
senior faculty appointment may be possible, commensurate with experience.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in chemical engineering or a related field by the
start of employment. Candidates with research and teaching interests in every
area relevant to the field of chemical engineering will be considered,
including but not limited to candidates with areas of research in chemical and
electrochemical catalysis and reaction engineering; computational and molecular
modeling; biomanufacturing, bioprocess engineering, or applied synthetic
biology; process systems engineering and energy systems; biomedical engineering
and advanced technologies for health and the environment, sustainability; and
materials design and engineering. All strong candidates in chemical engineering
fields are encouraged to apply. Faculty duties include teaching classes at the
undergraduate and graduate levels, advising students, conducting original
scholarly research, developing course materials at the graduate and
undergraduate levels, and being involved in service to MIT and the profession.
The successful candidate will be provided with a generous
start-up package to complement outstanding laboratory and office space, as well
as access to state-of-the-art core facilities across the MIT campus. The pay
range for a 9-month academic appointment at the entry-level Assistant Professor
rank (excluding summer salary): $140,000 – $150,000. The pay offered to a
selected candidate during hiring will be based on factors such as (but not
limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's
work experience and education/training, internal peer equity, and applicable
legal requirements. This pay range represents base pay only and does not
include any other benefits or compensation. The candidate will be assigned
senior faculty mentors who will aid in the professional development of the
candidate, and will be provided discretionary funds for professional
expenditures.
