Engineering, Temple University announces a position for the CHAIR, DEPARTMENT
OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
POSITION SUMMARY
College of Engineering
invites applications for a Chairperson position in the Civil and Environmental
Engineering Department at Temple University, beginning July-August 2026. We seek an outstanding scholar and teacher
who will contribute to our mission of academic excellence, innovative research,
and inclusive education.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Chair should possess a
deep commitment to quality teaching and will be expected to provide leadership
to curriculum development resulting in outstanding programs that will prepare
students to address problems in today’s built and natural environment. We seek applicants
with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working
effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of
underrepresented groups. The ideal candidate will be expected to have an
established program of research and bring a vision to the department as an
entity where scholarly endeavors may be pursued. Areas of expertise may include,
but are not limited to Infrastructure, Transportation, Geotechnical, and
Structural Engineering. We are rapidly expanding our continuously growing
funded research as well as graduate and undergraduate programs. The successful
candidate should have a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field
and preferably has a professional engineer license. The candidate must be able to develop a
significant research program and provide effective instruction at the undergraduate
and graduate levels. Competitive salaries and startup support will be provided.
MAIN DUTIES:

Report to the
Dean of the College of Engineering
·
Enhance the teaching
and research mission of the department.
·
Explore
opportunities for curriculum development.
·
Lead the
strategic planning process, setting long- and short-term goals aimed at
continuously striving for academic excellence and increasing the visibility of
the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.

Coordinate with
the Dean’s office in the management of the department budget and monitor the allocation
of financial resources.
QUALIFICATIONS
In striving for further growth, we are looking for the Department Chairperson, who would be tenured at the rank of full professor or associate professor.
ABOUT THE DEPARMENT
The Department currently has 13
full-time faculty members, 15 adjunct professors, and approximately 300
students. The Department offers two ABET accredited undergraduate programs in civil engineering
and construction engineering technology, two master’s degrees in civil
engineering and environmental engineering, two Ph.D. programs in civil
engineering and environmental engineering, and a graduate certificate program Stormwater
Management. The Department hosts a National Science Foundation I/UCRC Water and
Environmental Technology (WET) Center. A number of industries and agencies are
recent research sponsors, including the NSF, various DOT’s, DoD, EPA, NOAA,
NIH, PA DEP, PA DCED, EPRI, Philadelphia Water Department. The Department also
has a master services agreement with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
