Position Description

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in theoretical particle cosmology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) to begin fall 2026. This position is part of the Emmy Noether Research Group “Novel Signatures of Relativistic Particle Production in Cosmology”, led by Dr. Kim Berghaus. The group (starting in February 2026) will investigate the impact of fundamental interactions between scalar fields and other light degrees of freedom on cosmological observations. Topics of investigation include inflation, dark energy, and the Hubble tension.

The successful candidate has interests that overlap significantly with those of Dr. Kim Berghaus (which beyond particle cosmology extend to dark matter detection), and will have the opportunity to collaborate with other groups at the faculty of physics during their appointment.

The Emmy Noether Group is integrated in KIT’s Institute for Astroparticle Physics (IAP), and will interface closely with the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITP) and Institute for Theoretical Particle Physics (TTP). Potential collaborators include Prof. Dr. Margarete Muehlleitner (ITP), Prof. Dr. Thomas Schwetz-Mangold (IAP), and Prof. Dr. Felix Kahlhoefer (TTP).

KIT is also home to a lively experimental program in astroparticle physics (https://www.iap.kit.edu/english/index.php) and experimental particle physics (https://www.etp.kit.edu/english/research.php).

The position is for an initial duration of two years with an option to renew for a third year and offers competitive salary, benefits, and research allowance (salary level E13 TV-L).

Required Education:

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in theoretical physics by fall 2026.

Application Procedure:

Cover Letter, Research statement (1-3 pages), Curriculum Vitae, Publication list (optional), 3-5 Recommendation letters (to be submitted by the reference writer).

How to apply:

Preferred: Submit your application on AJO. Alternative: Send cover letter, research statement and curriculum vitae in a single pdf to kberghaus.kit.phys.applications@gmail.com, and arrange for three reference letters to be sent to the same email.

The review of applications will begin on December 10th and will continue until the position is filled.

Application Materials Required:
Submit the following items online at this website to complete your application:
  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research statement
  • Publication lists (optional)
  • Three or more reference letters (to be submitted online by the reference writers on this site help popup)
And anything else requested in the position description.
