Position Description

The Department of Music at Duke University seeks to hire an instructor to teach applied piano to music majors, minors, and non-majors. The position entails a teaching load of up to 15 hours per week, along with participation in additional piano area activities for one hour per week. This is a one semester non-regular rank leave replacement faculty position for the spring 2026 semester. 

Primary Responsibilities: 
  • Applied Lessons: provide weekly piano instruction to undergraduate and graduate students. 
  • Chamber Music Coaching: coaching of up to three chamber music ensembles as part of the 15 hour teaching load. 
  • Piano Area Events: attend and support all piano area activities, including: 
    • piano area recitals 
    • piano master classes 
    • graduating student recitals 
    • 2-3 studio classes 
  • Artistic Supplement Review: assist in reviewing and evaluating classical piano artistic supplements submitted by prospective students applying to Duke University. 
 The instructor will be expected to ensure continuity and a smooth transition for existing piano students. A high level of professionalism, reliability, and integration into the department’s curriculum is essential. 

A master’s degree or higher in piano performance is required, as well as demonstrated excellence in piano performance and broad knowledge of the repertoire. In addition, candidates must have collegiate-level teaching experience, including individual instruction and chamber music coaching. Please submit a CV and cover letter by October 31, 2025.
