Position Description

The Department of Earth and Environmental Science at Temple University (https://cst.temple.edu/research-priorities-departments/departments/department-earth-environmental-science) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Hydrology, to begin in July 2026. The specialization within hydrology is flexible, but we especially welcome applications from individuals whose research will complement or further strengthen the department’s established expertise in hydrogeology, urban hydrology, hydrogeophysics and ecohydrology. Prior experience or potential in teaching groundwater hydrology at undergraduate and graduate levels are not requisites but will be advantageous. The successful candidate will develop a highly creative, externally funded research program, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geology/environmental science. Collaboration among faculty is strongly encouraged to leverage existing expertise in surface processes, human-environment interactions, sedimentary systems, energy, environmental and polar geophysics, ocean and climate modeling, geochemistry, and planetary geology. We strongly encourage collaboration both within the department and with other units across the university, including the Department of Computer and Information Science and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Temple University, founded in 1884, is a Carnegie R1 (Very High Research Activity) institution and one of the nation’s largest urban public research universities. Located in North Philadelphia, just 1.5 miles from Center City, Temple enrolls more than 30,000 students across undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The Department of Earth and Environmental Science, which is part of the College of Science and Technology, provides rigorous training in geological and environmental science to undergraduate (BS and BA Geology, BS Environmental Science), Masters (Geology, Environmental Geoscience), and Ph.D. (Geoscience) students. To apply, email the following materials as one PDF file to eessearch@temple.edu: (1) cover letter; (2) CV; (3) statement of research plan; (4) statement of teaching philosophy and instructional experience; (5) names and contact information of at least three references; and (6) reprints of up to three peer-reviewed publications. Review of applications will begin on December 15, 2025. The position will remain open until filled, but application materials should be submitted by this date for full consideration. Temple University values diversity and is committed to equal opportunity for all persons regardless of age, color, disability, ethnicity, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, veteran status or any other status protected by law.
