Position Description

Description: The LAPTh (CNRS/USMB) invites expressions of interest for a postdoctoral researcher position in theoretical cosmology. The position is dedicated to developing a robust and efficient framework that incorporates a broad range of neutrino and dark-matter models, assessing their effects on large-scale-structure (LSS) statistics as measured by the power spectrum and bispectrum of galaxies or intensity maps. The project emphasizes spectroscopic galaxy surveys—in particular the analysis of data from the ESA Euclid mission—and 21-cm intensity mapping, especially from the SKA Observatory (SKAO). Our goal is to generalize existing analytic methods—particularly the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS)—to include the effects of massive neutrinos and non-standard dark matter, validate theoretical predictions against simulated datasets, forecast expected constraints from Euclid and SKAO, and ultimately analyze the Euclid spectroscopic galaxy sample in its second data release.

Collaboration Framework and Funding: This position is funded by DarkES, a joint ANR–DFG research project supported by the French and German national science foundations, co-led by Dr. Azadeh Moradinezhad (LAPTh) and Prof. Julien Lesgourgues (RWTH Aachen University). In addition to the postdoctoral researcher based at LAPTh, the collaboration will include a PhD student and several Master’s students in Aachen, ensuring close and regular interaction between the Annecy and Aachen teams through joint meetings and short visits. Collaborations with the group of Prof. Mathias Garny at Technical University of Munich (TUM) on particle physics modeling of nonstandard neutrino and dark matter components as well as applications to Lyman-alpha forest also foreseen. The selected postdoc will also have the opportunity to join the Euclid Consortium within the framework of the project.

Qualifications and Team : We seek a researcher with demonstrated experience in perturbative modeling of LSS (in particular biased tracers of dark matter), analysis of simulated datasets, and strong programming in Python and C. Familiarity with galaxy-redshift survey or 21-cm data analysis is a plus. The successful candidate will join the cosmology and astroparticle team at LAPTh under the supervision of Dr. Moradinezhad. The position offers access to CNRS/LAPTh computing resources and travel support, as well as rich interactions with collaborators at RWTH Aachen and TUM and with the broader regional community (including the University of Geneva and CERN).

Terms of Employment : The appointment is for two years, renewable for a third year subject to performance and funding, with salary set by the CNRS scale and commensurate with experience. A PhD in cosmology, astrophysics, or theoretical physics is required by the start date. The start date is October 1st- 2026.

Application Procedure: Applications should be submitted in English via AcademicJobsOnline and include: (i) a cover letter; (ii) a CV with publications; (iii) a research statement (up to four pages) outlining past work, future plans, and fit to the position; and (iv) three letters of recommendation to be arranged by the applicant. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a remote interview. For questions, please contact Dr. Moradinezhad.

About LAPTh (https://lapth.cnrs.fr): LAPTh is a mixed research unit (UMR) of CNRS and Université Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB). Its scientific activities span cosmology and astroparticles, particle physics, and mathematical physics. The cosmology and astroparticle team (https://astrocosmolapth.com) conducts research on cosmic large-scale structure, cosmic microwave and infrared backgrounds, cross-correlations between cosmological datasets, early-Universe physics, cosmic-ray propagation and dark matter, gamma-ray bursts, and astrophysical probes of neutrinos.
