Position Description

The Institute for Fundamental Physics of the Universe (IFPU, www.ifpu.it/), Trieste, Italy, invites applications for two postdoctoral research positions to start in 2026.

IFPU is a joint initiative of International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA, www.sissa.it/ap/ and www.sissa.it/app/), the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, https://www.ictp.it/) and the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF; Observatory of Trieste, https://www.oats.inaf.it/index.php/en/). The research fields supported by the Institute are astroparticle physics, astrophysical probes of fundamental interactions, early Universe, gravitational wave astrophysics, structures in the Universe, theory and phenomenology of gravity. The Institute aims at hosting and promoting a vigorous and innovative multi-disciplinary research program focused on investigating the fundamental laws of Nature under a Cosmological and Astrophysical perspective.

Postdocs at IFPU work in close connections with staff members from the supporting institutions - about 30 researches in total - and also benefit from the extended visitor and research programs the Institute is hosting. The positions are for two years, with a possible extension to a third year.

The first postdoctoral position is related to topics closely connected to the research activity of the Astrophysics and Cosmology group at SISSA, including solar system, astrobiology and astrochemistry, high-energy astrophysics, stellar and galaxy evolution, galaxy clusters, IGM, large-scale structure, cosmology, gravitational wave astrophysics and methods of analysis and interpretation.

For the second position, the successful candidate is expected to conduct research in topics of interest for the Astronomical Observatory of Trieste and INAF. These include solar system, astrobiology, high-energy astrophysics, AGN, stellar and galaxy evolution, galaxy clusters, IGM, large-scale structure and cosmology.

Applications should include: * Curriculum Vitae, * Publication List, * Research Statement, * 3 reference letters to be submitted online through this website.

All applications will be considered for both positions, completed applications should be received no later than January 7th, 2026.

Application Materials Required:
Submit the following items online at this website to complete your application:
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research statement
  • Publication list
