Position Description:
Position Description
Six or more postdoctoral positions in theoretical physics directed towards formal quantum field theory and/or string theory, at Uppsala University, starting 2026/09/01, or as agreed. The postdoctoral positions are part of several projects and grants funded by the European Research Council and the Olle Engkvist Foundation. Four positions are within the theory division in the department of physics and astronomy and two are within the department of mathematics. The division of the positions is mainly administrative. Successful candidates for all six positions would sit within the theory division, which consists of more than 40 active members and offers a world-class environment for research in high-energy and mathematical physics. The theory division positions are supervised by Henrik Johansson, Magdalena Larfors, Joseph Minahan, Oliver Schlotterer, and Chia-Hsien Shen, while the mathematics positions are supervised by Michele Del Zotto. Applicants to the theory division positions are expected to conduct research in theoretical and mathematical physics related to integrability in gauge theories, AdS/CFT, gravitational waves, effective field theory, scattering amplitudes, algebraic geometry, or applications of machine learning to string phenomenology. Applicants to the mathematics department positions are expected to conduct research on the higher structure of symmetries and their applications to quantum field theories. Successful candidates working on formal aspects of scattering amplitudes will be part of the ERC Synergy Grant MaScAmp (https://www.mascamp.org) and would be expected to participate in regular exchanges among the nodes in Dublin, Oxford, Potsdam and Uppsala. Prerequisites: The holder of a postdoctoral researcher position must have a PhD degree in theoretical physics or equivalent at the employment start date. The application should contain a cover letter mentioning their research area, a CV, a brief research statement, and a publication list. The applicant should arrange to have two or more letters of recommendation made available on AcademicJobsOnline. Contact information for the letter writers should be included in the application. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV. Applications and letters of recommendation for all six positions should be sent to AcademicJobsOnline linked to this advertisement. Applicants to the four theory division positions must also submit an application to the Uppsala University website at https://www.uu.se/en/about-uu/join-us/jobs-and-vacancies/job-details?query=874563 containing the cover letter, CV, research statement, and publication list. Letters of recommendation should only be sent to AcademicJobsOnline. The application must be received by December 15, 2025 at 23:59 CET in order to be considered for these positions. Applicants to the two mathematics positions must also submit an application to the Uppsala University website at https://www.uu.se/en/about-uu/join-us/jobs-and-vacancies/job-details?query=874546, containing the CV and research statement. Letters of recommendation should only be sent to AcademicJobsOnline. The application must be received by December 30, 2025 at 23:59 CET in order to be considered for these positions. Applicants may submit applications to both sites if they want to be considered for all six positions. Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University's excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds. Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance and women are especially encouraged to apply.
