Description
Review of applications begins February 16, 2026. The Stanford University Political Science Department seeks to appoint up to two postdoctoral fellows, funding permitting, for the 2026-2027 academic year as part of the Stanford Civics Initiative (https://civics.stanford.edu/). Fellows will teach, conduct their own research, and participate in the intellectual community of the department and the university. We invite applications from recent Ph.D. recipients whose research agendas and teaching experience focus on political history, political economy, and/or the history of political thought. Stanford Civics Initiative This fellowship is part of the Stanford Civics Initiative (SCI) in the Political Science Department of Stanford University. SCI furthers the Department’s longstanding commitment to teaching and research on the moral and philosophical foundations of democratic citizenship. SCI’s goals are to strengthen, expand, and diversify the community of scholars working on issues of democratic citizenship, the history of political thought and practice, political economy, and political history and to teach a full range of rigorous undergraduate courses on these topics. The postdoctoral fellows will take on integral roles in achieving both goals. Fellowship responsibilities This is a combined research and teaching fellowship. Fellows will have one quarter per year free of teaching responsibilities and will teach (or assist in teaching) two or three classes over the rest of the year. Fellows are required to be on campus for the full academic year and expected to take part in the department’s intellectual community, including by participating in the weekly Political Theory workshop and presenting their own in-progress work. Appointment requirements and application details The fellowship appointment is initially for one year (September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2027) but is renewable for up to a total of three years, depending on performance, funding and departmental need. The expected base pay range for this position is $80,000 and $85,000 annually. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity. The fellows receive full Stanford University benefits, including healthcare, as well as research funds. Applicants must have received their Ph.D. no earlier than September 2023 and no later than the fellowship start date of September 1, 2026. Stanford University is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer, committed to increasing the diversity of its workforce. It welcomes applications from women, members of minority groups, veterans, persons with disabilities, and others who would bring additional dimensions to the university's research and teaching mission.
