Position Description
We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position in theoretical high-energy physics within the ERC Consolidator Grant–funded project ExPertQCD, led by Risto Paatelainen. The position is based at the Helsinki Institute of Physics (HIP) and the University of Helsinki, and focuses on developing algorithmic techniques, based on thermal Loop–Tree Duality, to enable large-scale multiloop computations at nonzero temperature and chemical potential. The project aims to overcome long-standing challenges in finite-temperature and finite-density field theory. Applications include pushing the thermodynamic properties of hot and dense QCD to the full four-loop level, computing accurate predictions for the phase structure of the early Universe in the presence of strong phase transitions, and real-time observables. The project is also closely connected to the Centre of Excellence on Neutron Stars (neutronstars.fi), focusing on a holistic understanding of neutron stars. Qualifications: Applicants should hold a PhD in theoretical physics (or expect to complete it before the start date) and have a strong background in quantum field theory. Experience with multiloop calculations in vacuum or thermal field theory and with numerical methods is advantageous. A strong interest in developing new computational methods is essential. We offer: A full-time postdoctoral position, initially for 2 years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. For exceptionally strong candidates, a total duration of up to 5 years may be considered. The position offers competitive ERC-level salary and excellent research conditions in an international research environment. The position is expected to start in Fall 2026. Applications should include: CV and publication list, A brief statement of research interests and motivation, Three letters of reference. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. For informal inquiries, please contact: Risto Paatelainen risto.paatelainen(at)helsinki.fiApplication Materials Required:
