Description
Location: The Laboratoire d'Annecy de Physique Théorique (LAPTh) within the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS)Description: The Laboratoire d’Annecy de Physique Théorique (LAPTh, CNRS/Univ. Savoie Mont Blanc) invites expressions of interest for one or more postdoctoral researcher positions focused on advancing simulation-based Inference (SBI) frameworks for modern data analysis in cosmology and astroparticle physics.
These positions focus on the development and application of SBI methods in two contexts: spectroscopic galaxy surveys and the gamma-ray sky. The scientific objectives include constraining cosmological and astrophysical models, extracting information from small scales through SBI, both as standalone probes and in combination.
More specifically, the project requires developing the SBI framework including simulations as forward models of observables, performing inference on synthetic datasets and robustness tests, and applying the developed methods to publicly available data, in particular from DESI/Euclid and the Fermi-LAT telescope.
Qualifications: Applicants should have: a PhD in cosmology or astrophysics (completed by the start date), demonstrated experience in large-scale structure simulations, working knowledge of applications of machine learning techniques in cosmology and/or astrophysics (in particular simulation-based inference), strong programming skills in Python and experience with HPC environments. Experience with galaxy redshift surveys and/or gamma-ray astrophysics is desirable. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds who are eager to apply their skills to cosmology and astroparticle physics. Beyond technical excellence, we seek a collaborative scientist committed to reproducible research and to mentoring students.
Research Environment and Supervision: The positions will be embedded within the Astroparticle and Cosmology group at LAPTh, and will be supervised by Dr. Azadeh Moradinezhad, with close interaction with Dr. Francesca Calore for gamma-ray astrophysics. The positions will provide access to CNRS/LAPTh computing resources, travel support, and a vibrant research environment involving several PhD students and postdocs, and strong regional and international connections, with collaborations with the University of Geneva and CERN.
Terms of Employment: The appointments are expected to be for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year subject to performance and funding availability. The salary will follow the CNRS/USMB scale and will be commensurate with experience. The anticipated start date is 1 October 2026, with some flexibility possible.
Application Procedure: Interested candidates are invited to submit an expression of interest in English via AcademicJobsOnline and include: (i) a cover letter; (ii) a CV including a list of publications; (iii) a research statement (up to four pages) outlining past work, future plans, and fit to the position; and (iv) three letters of recommendation to be arranged by the applicant. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a remote interview. Applications received before the 20th of February 2026 will be given full priority. Nevertheless, the positions will be open until filled.
About LAPTh (https://lapth.cnrs.fr): LAPTh is a joint research unit (UMR) of CNRS and Université Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB). Its scientific activities span cosmology and astroparticle physics, particle physics, and mathematical physics. The Astroparticle and Cosmology group (https://astrocosmolapth.com) conducts research on cosmic large-scale structure, cosmic microwave and infrared backgrounds, cross-correlations between cosmological datasets, early-Universe physics, cosmic rays and dark matter, gamma-ray astrophysics, and neutrino probes.
