Position Description
The Experimental Particle Physics group at the University of British Columbia invite applications for a Research Assistant position on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The UBC ATLAS group has a significant effort in the construction of the inner tracker (ITk) end-cap strip detector upgrade and its readout system for the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC run. The group played a leading role in the design, construction and operation of the readout system of the current Inner Detector, and for the alignment, software, and overall operation of the experiment’s present tracking system. Our ATLAS data analysis covers a wide range of topics from top-quark physics, Higgs boson properties, long-lived particle searches and other beyond the standard model searches. The successful candidate will play a leading role in the building, testing and deployment phases of the ATLAS ITk end-cap silicon strip detector, as well as having the opportunity to contribute in ATLAS data analysis. Qualified candidates will have strong background in many aspects of instrumentation development and engineering in high energy physics, with an expertise in silicon-based detectors, facility with software, and a strong record of creating testing, QA, and production processes for large-scale experiments. They will also have a proven ability to lead a team of students, technicians and engineers on a complex multinational project. The position will be based at UBC, with travel to CERN and related sites for collaboration meetings, consultations, and detector installation. A PhD or equivalent degree in a related field is required. Interested individuals are asked to submit a cover letter and a CV along with and have 3 reference letters in support of your application. In your cover letter, please briefly address your plans for and/or past contributions to a culture of equity and inclusion. Applications will be reviewed starting on March 2nd, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled. The position will ideally start in May 2026. This is a three-year position with the possibility of renewal, with a competitive annual salary of $70,000-86,000 CAD, depending on experience. UBC offers Research Associates a wide-ranging benefits plan that includes extended health and dental coverage, paid parental leave, and more. Research Associates are eligible to participate in the Faculty Pension Plan. UBC and the ATLAS team are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all team members. We strongly encourage researchers from underrepresented groups in physics and astronomy to apply. This position is accessible to researchers with disabilities and working environment and/or time constraints. Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Metis, Inuit, or Indigenous person. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. For inquiries, please reach out to Profs.
