Position Description

Faculty Position in Farriery

The Department of Clinical Sciences with the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University invites applications for a Farrier.

The successful clinical candidate will be expected to:

•Provide Farrier services to the patients at the Equine and Nemo Farm Animal Hospital working closely with veterinarians to manage routine and complex cases for primarily horses but also small ruminants and pigs

•Provide Farrier services to Cornell University horses at the Equine Park

•Provide Farrier services to local equine clients

•Function as the Course Leader and primary instructor for the Farrier Program, a 16-week program (3x per year) for those with initial farrier skills wanting to improve

•Develop a course syllabus, content, and assessments

Instruct veterinary students throughout the curriculum and extra-curricularly on management of hoof disorders of the horse

•Didactic lectures and interactive sessions

•Provide 2-week elective farrier rotation for veterinary students

•Cadaver and live-horse laboratories

•Assist with Student Chapter of the AAEP Farrier Short Courses

•Teach in equine elective courses

•Sports Medicine, Health Management Rotation, Lameness

•Perform collaborative research on disorders of horses

•Educational outreach both locally and regionally

The successful candidate will have:

•Associate Degree Animal Science or Bachelor’s degree a plus

•Specialized training (such as American Farrier’s Association Certified Journeyman Farrier, Therapeutic Endorsement, International Association of Professional Farriers, Accredited Farrier, APF I), or minimum 5 years professional experience with multiple breeds and uses of horses

•Therapeutic farriery, i.e. partnering with veterinarians to execute therapeutic shoeing recommendations for medical cases, collaborating with veterinary clinics

•Evidence of continuing education for the past 5 years

Preferred

•Experience teaching, i.e. presenting clinics, presentations to professional and/or lay audiences, engaging and teaching students in a clinical and/or classroom setting.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
