Position Description

Postdoctoral Fellow in Quantum Information and Complex Dynamical Systems

Nordita, The Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1957. It moved to the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2007, where it is jointly hosted by KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University. Research at Nordita covers a broad range of theoretical physics.

Further information about Nordita can be found at www.nordita.org

Project description

Two postdoctoral positions within the Wallenberg Initiative on Networks and Quantum Information (WINQ) at Nordita. WINQ is a research programme supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW). The positions target you who would like to do independent theoretical research at the intersection of quantum information science and complex dynamical systems, with the aim of addressing major open challenges at and across these fields. Hosted by Nordita, jointly run by Stockholm University, KTH, and Uppsala University, the positions offer a stimulating international research environment. Successful candidates may also have opportunities to collaborate with other KAW-funded initiatives in Sweden, including the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) and the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT).

The scientific scope of the positions encompasses, but is not limited to, the following research areas:

Quantum Information and Processing (QIP):
quantum technology, ranging from quantum devices, quantum information theory, quantum sensing, and quantum computation; quantum algorithms; quantum simulators; quantum error detection and correction; coding and sharing of quantum information.

Complex Dynamical Networks (CDN):
neural network learning; chaotic dynamical systems; deep and recurrent networks; spatiotemporal multiscale systems; multiplex and multilayer networks; neurobiological networks.

Successful candidates are expected to conduct independent and original theoretical research within quantum information and processing, complex dynamical networks, or at the interface between these broadly defined areas. Applicants with interdisciplinary research profiles are particularly encouraged to apply. We are seeking persons who can relate to our ongoing activities, this meaning both alignment with and complementarity to the scientific scope of WINQ.

Main responsibilities

The position involves conducting research in accordance with the themes from the project description.

Qualification requirements

In order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made.

Assessment criteria

It is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. A successful candidate is expected to possess:

Meritorious qualifications:

We are looking for researchers who are excited about advancing science through collaboration and open exploration. The listed qualifications serve as a guide rather than a checklist. We encourage applications from candidates with complementary strengths and diverse research trajectories, including those who may not meet every requirement. There are no formal teaching requirements. However, for candidates interested in teaching, Nordita has connections with nearby institutions (Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Uppsala University), where teaching opportunities may be arranged. The position is intended to further the academic development of early-career researchers aiming for a future career in academia or advanced R&D-positions in emerging industry.

In the selection process, special attention will be given to:

About the employment

The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years. The intended start date is in the first half of 2026, or another date as agreed.
