Position Description
The Duke University Department of Physics invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track appointment at the rank of Instructor to primarily teach introductory physics in the fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters. Duke’s introductory physics course sequences are described here: https://physics.duke.edu/undergraduate/course-selection/introductory-physics-course Introductory physics is usually taught by a team of instructors and teaching assistants with a lead instructor and in some cases a course coordinator. The applicant will take on lead instructorship of Physics 122 (General Physics II, E&M, with necessary calculus taught along the way) in the fall semester and of Physics 121 (General Physics I, introductory mechanics, with necessary calculus taught along the way) in the spring semester. They will also coordinate the 121/122 General Physics course sequence, providing support for Physics 121 in fall and Physics 122 in spring, which will include course material modification or development and course organisation. The expected teaching load for this position is five courses over the year (2+3). In addition to the Physics 121/122 assignments listed above, the final course assignment is flexible and generally rotates. Applications received by May 1st will be guaranteed consideration. Applicants must provide proof of PhD degree prior to hire and should have a background in introductory physics teaching as well as strong interpersonal and organisational skills.
