Position Description

The Pierre R. Lamond Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, invites applications for a Professor of the Practice (PoP) position of any rank in the areas of Software, Computer Architecture, Artificial Intelligence / Machine learning (AI/ML), and/or Human-Computer Interaction.

The ideal candidate will have commitment, passion, and excellence in teaching. Candidates should be eager to educate a broad and diverse group of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to expand scientific boundaries in service to society and passionate about working to increase the participation and success of students from groups underrepresented in computer engineering and science. An ideal candidate would be enthusiastic about teaching a breadth of courses in at least one of the following areas: Software (such as Software Engineering, Introductory Programming, Algorithms, Automata Theory, Networking, Operating Systems, or Databases), Computer Architecture (such as Computer Organization, Digital Logic, Digital System Design, Fault Tolerant Computing, or CMOS VLSI Design), Artificial Intelligence (such as Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Generative AI, Agentic computing, or Python programming for AI/ML applications), and/or HCI (such as Introduction to HCI or UI/UX design).

Professors of the Practice are non-tenure-track regular rank faculty whose primary focus is the school’s educational mission. Reappointment and promotion are based on teaching excellence as well as complementary scholarship through technical or educational research, external research funding, peer-reviewed conference and journal publications, and/or involvement in engineering education at the national or international level. PoP faculty typically teach two courses per semester with teaching assistant support.

Interested candidates should submit the following by June 30th, 2026: cover letter (with contact information); curriculum vitae; teaching and mentoring statement (no more than 3 pages) describing teaching philosophy, previous experiences, future plans for teaching, and description of past experiences promoting and supporting a community building and outreach; research statement (no more than 3 pages) that includes a description of past research accomplishments, and, for applicants with an interest in future research, their plans for it; and list of three to five references who will provide letters on behalf of the candidate; note, letters will not be requested until after the first round of application evaluations.

Candidates must possess an earned doctorate in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field. The appropriate PoP rank will be determined based on a candidate's expertise and years of relevant experience.

Applications should be submitted online via Academic Jobs Online. Review of applications will begin immediately; applications received by June 30th, 2026 will receive priority attention. All applications received past this date will be considered until the position is filled.
