Position Description

Occupational Summary- Part-time 12-month position - 20 hours per week. This classification was created to permit compensation to individuals performing scholastic research on Campus using University facilities without detailed supervision. The use of this classification is reserved for those who have either received a doctorate or have demonstrated equivalent professional attainment. This classification is administered on Campus through the Office of the Provost and in the Medical Center through the Office of the Chancellor for Health Affairs. It is not subject to the Wage and Salary system.

Work Performed: Under the supervision of the Section Head for Archival Processing, this position will provide support for activities in the Economists’ Papers Archive, including the arrangement and description of manuscript collections and preparation of the collections for access and research by patrons in the reading room. This position should only engage in work in the Economists' Paper archive; they should not be engaged in work in any of the other archives. This position is funded externally by The Center for the History of Political Economy.

Responsibilities • Assists with establishing physical and intellectual control of archival collections through arranging and rehousing papers, electronic records, media, and volumes. • Performs processing of archival and manuscript collections and assists with analyzing their organization, arrangement, and preservation needs. • Prepares descriptions for collections, drawing upon economics background and expertise. • Assists with the processing of print materials as needed. • Assists librarians with special projects as needed, including exhibits, outreach, and public relations. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: Required: PhD in economics, history, public policy, or relevant field.

EXPERIENCE: Required: Strong analytical, organizational, and writing skills; excellent communication, project management, and interpersonal skills; subject background in economics or the history of political economy; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; accurate, efficient, reliable, and detail-oriented; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer service. Preferred: Working competency in a foreign language relevant to collection(s) to be processed (French, Spanish, German).

Working Conditions: • Must be able to safely move 40 pounds and unpack, shelve, and shift large quantities of library materials • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible • Frequent bending, crouching, and stooping • Normal office environment.
