Position Description
The Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University invites applications for a clinical track faculty position in the Section of Companion Animal Emergency and Critical Care. Candidates must have a DVM or foreign equivalent degree. Board certification in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care is preferred, but candidates who have recently completed an approved residency and are eligible to sit the board certification examination in Emergency and Critical Care will also be considered. The successful candidate will join seven board-certified Companion Animal Emergency and Critical Care faculty members training nine ECC residents working in a comprehensive teaching and referral hospital with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. The candidate will be expected to provide excellent clinical care and effective client communication, as well as deliver didactic and laboratory instruction to veterinary students, and participate in active continuing education for the veterinary community. A primary focus will be development and delivery of simulation-based education and research in the Tetlow and Roy Park Veterinary Innovation Lab (the Park Sim Lab), a state-of-the-art veterinary simulation center. The successful candidate will join a team of experienced simulation educators, including the Director of the Park Sim Lab, as well as an administrative support team. Courses are offered to a variety of learners, including veterinary students, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, veterinary technology students, and lay people from the community. Experience or strong interest in simulation-based veterinary medical education, including development of pedagogically sound simulators and simulation training, hypothesis-driven simulation education research, and simulation-based assessment is required. Additionally, the successful candidate will have substantial responsibility for teaching in the veterinary curriculum, including facilitating problem-based learning groups in the pre-clinical physiology curriculum (approximately 12 weeks of teaching commitment), and participating in the ongoing redesign of the late pre-clinical (Stage 2) veterinary curriculum. Our Stage 2 curriculum redesign is a bold, faculty-driven transformation that replaces traditional lecture-heavy teaching with integrated, case-based, and active learning experiences centered on clinical reasoning and spectrum-of-care decision-making. We are building a forward-thinking, collaborative model that prepares students for real-world veterinary practice from day one. The candidate should exhibit outstanding interpersonal skills and a cooperative work ethic that will interface well with all Sections of the College. Distribution of effort in the Section and Department will be determined in accordance with the service needs, academic priorities, and the candidate’s expertise and academic goals. Commitment percentages to clinical teaching and service in the Cornell University Hospital for Animals, lecture and laboratory instruction of veterinary students and house officers, and independent and collaborative research are negotiable. Clinical duties require flexible working hours that may include daytime, evening, weekend and shared holiday responsibilities. The successful candidate will share supervision of a 24-hour emergency receiving (ER) service as well as primary care of critically ill patients in the 30-cage intensive care unit (ICU) through the Critical Care (CC) Service. Both the ER and ICU are staffed 24 hours a day with licensed veterinary technicians, with a mission for excellence in patient care. The ICU is open style with all specialty services (including the CC Service) providing primary care of the patients in the unit. The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with surgical and medical specialists regarding case management. The salary range for this position is $155,000-$175,000 annually; salary, rank, and title will be commensurate with academic credentials and experience. Pay Ranges:
The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:
