The
Duke Culture lab, directed by Dr. Cristina Salvador and part of the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University, is recruiting for an Associate in Research. This position will be in person (Durham, NC, USA), with an approximate start date in summer 2026. The appointment requires a two-year commitment, with an initial contract for one year with a possibility of renewal for a second year or more depending on performance and funding. It is open to international and domestic candidates.
Professor Salvador’s research is in Cultural Psychology and Neuroscience. Her research uses a combination of methods to examine cultural differences in interdependence, self-perception, and social norms. You can read more about the Duke Culture Lab and Dr. Salvador here:
https://sites.duke.edu/culturelab/. The Associate in Research would work primarily on projects examining cultural psychological processes in Latin American groups.
Position Details:
This position is ideal for candidates interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Psychology, Neuroscience, or related fields. The anticipated start date is Summer 2026.
Job Description:
The Associate in Research will work closely with Professor Salvador (PI) and be involved in all aspects of the research process. Professor Salvador has a strong commitment to mentorship and aims to provide the Associate in Research the experience to be an excellent candidate for graduate programs in 2 years. As such, this position is primarily research-focused (80%) with minimal administrative duties (20%).
Research-related tasks include:
- Preparing IRBs
- Reviewing and giving feedback on grant applications
- Designing and programming online, lab and field studies
- Training and mentoring a team of undergraduate research assistants with Professor Salvador
- Collecting data (online, in lab)
- Analyzing data
- Writing manuscripts for publication
- Gathering data from archival data bases from different countries
- Translating materials for a survey
- Working on collaborative projects with Professor Salvador
- Potential to work on an independent project with Professor Salvador
Administrative tasks include:
- Maintaining the lab website
- Coordinating purchases with Psychology & Neuroscience administrative staff
- Organizing lab events
Qualifications:
As the position is primarily research-focused, a strong candidate will meet all required qualifications. An ideal candidate will meet most (if not all) desired qualifications.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field
- At least 1-2 years of prior research experience, preferably in cultural psychology or a related area
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Communicates promptly and efficiently
- Self-motivated and hard-working
- Excellent ability to collaborate with others
- Excellent interpersonal skills
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience designing websites
- Experience in programming studies with Qualtrics
- Experience running statistical analyses with R and/or SPSS.
- Excellent oral presentation and writing skills
- Strong interest in Cultural Psychology and/or Cultural Neuroscience, particularly in Latin American groups
- Fluency in Spanish, Japanese, Korean and/or Chinese
