Position Description

Description: The Laboratoire d’Annecy de Physique Théorique (LAPTh, CNRS/USMB) invites invites expressions of interest for one postdoctoral position focused on the phenomenology of axions and axion-like particles in dense astrophysical environments, including supernovae, neutron stars, and neutron star mergers. The successful candidate will work on characterizing the astrophysical signatures of axion production in dense media, with a particular emphasis on gamma-ray signatures, gravitational waves, and multi-messenger observables.

Qualifications: Applicants should have: a PhD in physics or astrophysics (completed by the start date), demonstrated experience in particle astrophysics, dense matter physics, or multi-messenger astronomy, and an interest in bridging theory with observational data. Experience with numerical simulations, effective field theories, or axion phenomenology is highly desirable. Beyond technical excellence, we seek a collaborative scientist committed to reproducible research and to mentoring students.

Research Environment and Supervision: The postdoc will be a member of the Astroparticle and Cosmology group at LAPTh, and will be supervised by Dr. Francesca Calore, with strong collaboration with Dr. P. D. Serpico. The position will provide access to CNRS/LAPTh computing resources, travel support, and a vibrant research environment involving several PhD students and postdocs, and strong regional and international connections, with collaborations with the University of Geneva and CERN.

Terms of Employment : The appointments are expected to be for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year subject to performance and funding availability. The salary will follow the CNRS/USMB scale and will be commensurate with experience. The anticipated start date is 1 October 2026, with some flexibility possible.

Application Procedure: Interested candidates are invited to submit an expression of interest in English via AcademicJobsOnlineand include: (i) a cover letter; (ii) a CV including a list of publications; (iii) a research statement (up to four pages) outlining past work, future plans, and fit to the position; and (iv) up to three letters of recommendation to be arranged by the applicant. Expressions of interest received before the 10th of April 2026 will be given full priority. Nevertheless, the positions will be open until filled. This position is pending funding confirmation.
