Position Description

The STELLAR lab (https://sites.google.com/view/thestellarlabgenoa/) of the Department of Physics at the University of Genoa invites applications for one postdoctoral research position (initial 2-year contracts, with potential extension for a further 2 years subject to performance and funding). The position is expected to commence in the autumn of 2026. The anticipated net salary for this position is approximately 2000 euros per month (plus benefits), comparable to that of an entry-level permanent researcher in Italy.

While any researchers with exceptional skills aligned with the STELLAR lab’s core research interests will be considered, those with established work in the following key development areas will receive special attention:

1) active matter, 2) statistical physics, 3) particle swarm optimisation, 4) critical phenomena in field theory, 5) and the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism of hydrodynamics.

About the group: The STELLAR lab is headed by three staff members, Andrea Amoretti (https://inspirehep.net/authors/1258948), Daniel K. Brattan (https://inspirehep.net/authors/1270146), and Nicodemo Magnoli (https://inspirehep.net/authors/1040503). At the moment we also have one postdoctoral researcher and two PhD students. Our general research interests lie at the edge between theoretical condensed matter physics, active matter and high energy physics. We have significant past work on the AdS/CFT correspondence applied to condensed matter systems, and we are currently in a phase of branching out into active matter and general statistical physics.

How to apply: Applications should include a research statement (indicating your core expertise), a curriculum vitae which includes your publication list, and two letters of recommendation. All materials should be submitted via Academic Jobs Online. Review of applications will continue until the positions are filled but materials sent before 30th April 2026 will have priority. Applications from members of groups that are historically underrepresented in physics are particularly encouraged.

For any further information, please contact Prof. Andrea Amoretti (andrea.amoretti@unige.it) Dr. Daniel Brattan (daniel.keith.brattan@edu.unige.it).

Application Materials Required:
Submit the following items online at this website to complete your application:
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research statement
  • Two reference letters (to be submitted online by the reference writers on this site help popup)
And anything else requested in the position description.
