Job Description: Associate Professor of the Practice and S&S Sr. Lecturing Fellow and Co-Director of Graduate Studies for the Bioethics and Science Policy Concentration About the Role The Social Sciences Research Institute is seeking an Associate Professor of the Practice to lead Bioethics research, scholarship, and curriculum across disciplines at Duke. The Duke Initiative for Science & Society is recruiting for a Senior Lecturing Fellow and Co-Director of Graduate Studies to provide academic leadership of the MA in Applied Ethics & Policy, Bioethics, and Science Policy Concentration. This is a full-time faculty position. The Social Sciences Research Institute will offer the primary appointment for a regular rank appointment. Science & Society will offer a membership appointment as Sr. Lecturing Fellow and an administrative appointment as Co-Director of Graduate Studies. Science & Society is the primary funder for this position. This position reports directly to the Interim Director of Science & Society, David Hoffman. There is a faculty Co-Director who leads the Tech Ethics & Policy concentration for the MA program in a parallel role. This position works alongside the Associate Director of Initiative Operations and the Program Management team, who are responsible for all program marketing and operations. Responsibilities This role will actively engage with interdisciplinary research and curriculum for the Social Sciences Research Institute. This role will act as co-Director of Graduate Studies for the MA in Applied Ethics & Policy, assuming academic leadership of the Bioethics and Science Policy Concentration. The overall goal will be to make Duke’s program the pre-eminent Master’s program in its field. This position will provide strategic leadership for the MA program’s bioethics track. This role will help build innovative and cutting-edge curriculum, attract leading faculty, identify meaningful research projects, cultivate valuable experiential learning opportunities, and form connections with industry/government/non-profit stakeholders. Over time, this position will broaden the impact of Duke’s Bioethics research profile and curriculum through initiatives such as a new curriculum, co-curricular projects, executive education, and online education opportunities. This position will provide mentorship to the students in the bioethics concentration of the MA program. This role will help new students chart a customized academic path here at Duke, introduce students to bioethics/healthcare policy co-curricular opportunities, help them identify research projects, and offer career development assistance. This role will help respond to students in need of special support (leave of absence, etc.) This position will help recruit new talented students to the MA program through online and in-person promotional programming, alongside the Associate Director.
