Position Description

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available immediately to join a project focused on elucidating the role of septin-family proteins in chloroplast division and mitochondrial fission. We seek a highly motivated researcher with a strong background in cell biology, genetics, genomics, and/or evolution. The main research organism in the Onishi lab will be the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii; however, the postdoc will collaborate with outside labs using diverse organisms, including human cells, plants, and protists.

Septins are a family of small GTPases that are well characterized for their roles in cytokinesis in animals and fungi. Recent reports, including those from our group, have identified septins in algae and protists, where they are involved in controlling the division and morphology of chloroplasts and mitochondria (PMIDs: 41959007, 38994454). Together with international collaborators, the postdoc will investigate how septins interact with these organelles of bacterial origin and regulate their dynamics, using in vivo and in vitro systems, aiming to gain insights into the evolution of early eukaryotes.

Clear evidence of past research productivity is required, and strong communication skills are expected. This position requires a PhD. To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter (including statements on scientific interest and career goals), curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references via Academic Jobs Online. Questions should be directed to Dr. Masayuki Onishi: masayuki.onishi@duke.edu.
