Position Description

Cornell Law School is seeking to hire up to two adjunct professors to co-teach and supervise individual controversy casework in the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC). The LITC, through the Low-Income Taxpayer Law and Accounting Practicum (LITLAP), represents clients in tax controversies with the IRS and also participates in relevant federal income tax policy discussions by commenting on proposed rules, regulations, and legislation. Participating students are enrolled at Cornell Law School or in the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. 

This year-round, part-time (50-75% FTE), grant-funded position requires the adjunct professor(s) to co-teach the course seminar with Professor Thomas Godwin, and supervise law students in cases of interest to them. The adjunct professor(s) would be expected to travel to Ithaca approximately seven times during the fall semester, and also travel to the area throughout the year as required for casework. Professor Godwin oversees the course seminar and supervises outreach and education. 

The anticipated start date for the position is July 1, 2026. 

The position may be conducted remotely within the United States (pending university approval). Please note that New York convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for the position if the work is conducted outside of NYS. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working outside NYS. 

Qualifications 
Preference will be given to candidates who have a law degree (J.D.), relevant practice experience, and eligibility to appear before the IRS to supervise LITC-qualifying cases. Bar admission in the U.S. Tax Court is also preferred.

The anticipated pay for this position is $30,000-100,000, and will be based on FTE and qualifications for the position. The anticipated pay is also inclusive of a taxable travel stipend to help offset costs to travel to campus.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:
