Duke University, School of Law
Position Description
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: LEGAL RESEARCH INSTRUCTOR
The Duke Law School seeks a part-time legal research instructor for one or two sections of its co-taught, year-long Legal Analysis, Research & Writing (LARW) program, beginning in August 2026. This is a part-time appointment as Extended Faculty with the status of Lecturing Fellow or Senior Lecturing Fellow.
Description: The LARW program is a 4-credit hour course that is part of the required curriculum for JD students in the first two semesters of law school. Each research instructor is paired with a full-time writing instructor, and each section typically enrolls 28-30 students. Intensive blocks of research classroom teaching and small-group student conferences take place during a three-week period each semester, typically in September and February, with course planning required in the preceding weeks. Two classes may also be jointly taught with writing instructors at the end of each semester. Additional office hours with students and regular meetings with the research instruction team are also expected.
More information about the required first-year LARW program can be found on the web at https://www.law.duke.edu/curriculum/legalwrit/index.
Qualifications: JD from an ABA-accredited law school is required. Master’s degree in library/information science is strongly preferred. Teaching experience, preferably in a law or other graduate/professional school setting, is strongly desired.
Compensation: Standard rate for 1 credit hour of adjunct instruction per section taught.
