Position Description

Community Enterprise Clinic

Supervising Attorney

Duke University School of Law seeks to hire a Supervising Attorney to support its Community Enterprise Clinic. The Clinic represents nonprofit organizations and social enterprises on a wide range of transactional, corporate formation and governance, and public policy matters.  Our clients are often active in the affordable housing and community economic development sectors but we work with clients focused on everything from the arts to heirs’ property.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Clinic’s Director to teach in the Clinic’s seminar and supervise student work on cases. Minimum professional requirements include a J.D. (or foreign equivalent) and at least three years of substantive and relevant legal experience.  Experience in clinical teaching is preferred but not required.

North Carolina Bar membership is required for this position. If the successful candidate for this position is not a member, they will be expected to seek membership as soon as possible and time for preparation for the bar exam will be provided.

The successful candidate will be expected to join the Duke Law faculty on a full-time basis in the summer of 2027. The precise contours of the position will be tailored to the strengths and interests of the successful applicant and formalized with their input. Specific academic title and terms of employment will be determined based upon the successful applicant’s qualifications.

Successful candidates will have the following demonstrated experience, skills, and interests:

·         Experience teaching and student mentoring in a clinical context;

·         Substantial legal experience representing clients in transactional and/or policy matters;

·         Familiarity with the law governing tax-exempt organizations, particularly those involved in community change work;

·         Ability and willingness to build and maintain connections to nonprofit organizations and social entrepreneurs in the Research Triangle region and across the state; and

·         Interest in developing students’ understanding of the connections between individual casework and opportunities for systemic and structural change.

Interested applicants must apply via Academic Jobs Online no later than 5:00 pm on September 4, 2026.
