The Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences (CAMS), in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) at the American University of Beirut, invites applications to the CAMS-Atiyah Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mathematics, commencing as early as October 2026, and no later than January 2027. The Fellowship is named after Sir Michael Atiyah, honoring his life and works as well as his profound engagement with CAMS since inception, both as once Chair of its International Advisory Committee and as a generous mentor to its directors and associates. The fellowship benefits from a generous gift from the Simons Foundation in Sir Michael’s name. It will be awarded biennially to an exceptional recent PhD in fields of mathematics which reflect the range of interests of Sir Michael. Special consideration will be given to applicants with a strong publication record who further showcase a dedication to teaching. The Fellowship entails a two-year appointment and will come with a competitive salary, health coverage, and yearly research funds. In the context of the CAMS-Atiyah Fellowship, the successful candidate is expected to: - Pursue independent research in mathematics, with ample opportunities to collaborate with CAMS faculty. - Teach up to one course per term in the Department of Mathematics (courses and additional compensation to be coordinated with department/FAS). - Contribute to the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. - Engage in academic/outreach activities at CAMS. Funding and benefits: - Salary which is commensurate with experience and consistent with AUB’s postdoctoral pay scale. - Yearly research funds to support research assistants, conference participation and/or collaborative research visits. - Additional compensation for teaching (to be coordinated with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences) - Co-pay health coverage under the University’s Health Insurance Plan Application Material: - Cover letter (up to 2 pages), summarizing the applicant’s background, research and teaching interests, and stating how their goals align with the Fellowship. - CV, including information on university-level education, current position, fellowships and awards, relevant academic employment, and the list of publications (published or in press, preprints will not be considered in the evaluation). - Research statement (3-4 pages), detailing past and ongoing research projects, then a plan for research to be conducted during the fellowship and how it aligns with the Fellowship’s focus. - Teaching and mentoring statement (2-3 pages), articulating the applicant’s pedagogy, any prior classroom teaching experience and/or approach to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. - Sample publications (up to 3 distinctive works). - Three letters of recommendation from scholars familiar with the applicant’s work [Letters must be submitted directly by the recommenders through our online application platform.
