Position Description

The Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at Pomona College invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Cognitive Science to begin Fall 2027. We seek candidates in any area of specialization within Cognitive Science that helps to inform theory, methods, and/or modeling in cognition, with the goal of uniquely expanding upon the existing strengths of the current Cognitive Science faculty (Lise Abrams and Megan Zirnstein). The Cognitive Science major is diverse, interdisciplinary, and rapidly growing in student interest. Therefore, we are particularly eager to see applications from an equally diverse pool of candidates who are outstanding scholars, dedicated educators, and enthusiastic about contributing to a vibrant, liberal arts community.

Candidates will provide evidence of a demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduates, a productive record of research, and an ability to involve undergraduates in research and advise thesis projects. Professors are expected to maintain an active research program along with a teaching load of two courses per semester. Courses to be taught include Introduction to Cognitive Science as well as new courses at the intermediate and advanced levels within the candidate's area(s) of expertise, which will contribute to a core set of departmental classes for the Cognitive Science major. The major is truly interdisciplinary, allowing students to take not only Cognitive Science courses but also Linguistics courses within the department and courses in other departments such as Philosophy, Computer Science, and Music.

Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. by the start of the position, which is July 1, 2027. The salary for this position will range from $105,000 to $130,000 and will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
