Position Description

The Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) WPI at the University of Tokyo invites applications for a tenured Professor or tenure-track Associate Professor of Mathematics starting on or after April 1, 2027.

We seek candidates who will thrive in our vibrant, international research environment and who are eager to actively engage and collaborate across disciplines—bridging mathematics, physics, and related fields to foster new scientific synergies. Successful candidates may also be involved in supervising graduate students.

Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) WPI, The University of Tokyo Institutes for Advanced Study, is an international research institute with English as its official language established in October 2007. The goal of the institute is to discover the fundamental laws of nature and to understand the universe from the synergistic perspectives of mathematics, theoretical and experimental physics, astronomy, and astrophysics. Kavli IPMU offers a highly collaborative and international environment. The institute hosts more than 1000 international visitors annually, and fosters new collaborations through daily interdisciplinary interactions, such as the well-known 3 pm “tea time.” Faculty are encouraged to work abroad for up to three months per year.

We are committed to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion (see our Code of Conduct: https://cd3.ipmu.jp/info/#code-of-conduct). We particularly welcome applications from individuals traditionally underrepresented in science, including women and gender minorities, persons with disabilities, and researchers from diverse cultural backgrounds.
