Position Description
The Department of Physics at Tokyo Metropolitan University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in theoretical gravitational physics. The position is funded by the KAKENHI Challenging Research project “Foundations of Non-Hermitian Gravitational Physics and Exploration of Black Hole Gravitational Waves” (project period: April 2026–March 2029; Principal Investigator: Hayato Motohashi).Black-hole gravitational radiation can be viewed as waves in an open system. By combining this perspective with concepts of non-Hermitian physics developed in fields such as nuclear physics and condensed-matter physics, the project aims to establish a new interdisciplinary research area, “non-Hermitian gravitational physics.”
The successful candidate is expected to work with Prof. Motohashi on topics related to the project. Possible topics include black-hole perturbation theory, quasinormal modes, exceptional points, avoided crossings, resonant excitation, non-Hermitian physics, ringdown gravitational waves, and black-hole spectroscopy.
Candidates with expertise in general relativity, black-hole perturbation theory, gravitational waves, mathematical physics, numerical relativity, scientific computing, or related areas are encouraged to apply. Prior experience with non-Hermitian physics is welcome but not required.
The position is expected to start in November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, depending on administrative procedures and the candidate’s situation. The position is funded until March 2029, subject to annual renewal, mutual agreement, and the regulations of Tokyo Metropolitan University.
The annual salary is expected to be approximately 4,000,000-6,000,000 JPY, depending on experience and in accordance with the salary regulations of Tokyo Metropolitan University.
