Position Description

The Department of Anthropology and Sociology at the Geneva Graduate Institute invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral position (70%) within the ERC Starting Grant project ICONS: Exploring Global Iconoclastic Politics in the 21st Century. ICONS is a comparative ethnographic project examining how the destruction, removal, and transformation of monuments and other visual symbols reshape political communities, historical memory, and claims to justice across different world regions. The successful candidate will lead an original ethnographic subproject on either: Liberal-democratic contexts (USA, with possible comparative work in the UK and Europe), or Postcolonial contexts (Democratic Republic of the Congo and Belgium, or another postcolonial African context). The position includes 9–12 months of fully funded fieldwork, close collaboration within an ERC-funded international research team, and opportunities for independent and co-authored publications. We welcome applications from candidates with: A PhD in anthropology or a closely related discipline (completed before the start date). Strong qualitative research experience. Regional expertise relevant to one of the two subprojects. An interest in visual politics, critical heritage, memory, iconoclasm, social movements, political or legal anthropology, colonial/postcolonial studies, or digital activism. Application deadline: August 21, 2026 For the full job description, more information about the project, and application instructions, please follow this link. Please indicate in your cover letter which subproject you are applying for.
