Description
Johns Hopkins University (JHU), in collaboration with Dr. Kate Rowlands at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) and Prof. Decker French at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, invite applications for a highly motivated individual to carry out postdoctoral research on topics related to the regulation of star formation and gas evolution in nearby galaxies. The focus of the project is to use the KILOGAS survey (https://kilogas.space/) which will investigate how galaxies evolve by examining the relationships between molecular gas, star formation, and black hole activity. KILOGAS is one of the largest surveys of ~500 nearby galaxies conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), combined with ionized gas and stellar properties from the MaNGA and SAMI optical integral field spectroscopic surveys. The applicant will derive star-formation histories and use this to understand the coupling of recent star-formation to the availability of gas and investigate the causes of star-formation efficiency variation in galaxies and test fundamental star formation laws that drive this range of behavior. The successful applicant will have the option to work with and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, if desired. The candidate will benefit from the highly collaborative environment between JHU and STScI, which hosts numerous journal clubs and colloquia, and offers opportunities for collaboration with other research groups and mentoring. Requirements: ● Applicants must hold a PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field by the start of employment. ● Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently ● Excellent team working skills ● Practical experience with analysis of multiwavelength integral field spectroscopy observations in the context of galaxy evolution Preferred: ● Expertise with full spectral fitting of star-formation histories and/or analysis of molecular gas observations. This is a two-year appointment, with the possibility of extension contingent upon available funding and performance. The position has a preferred start date between June and October 2027. The salary range for this position is $74,000 to $82,000. A higher salary may be possible for exceptionally qualified candidates. Benefits for the position as described at https://hr.jhu.edu/benefits-worklife/. Please submit through this site: (1) Cover Letter (2) CV (3) List of publications (4) research statement of approximately 3 pages describing relevant experience, current interests, and future research goals, and (5) contact information of two people willing to provide letters of reference. Letters will be requested for shortlisted applicants. The Johns Hopkins University is committed to equal opportunity for its faculty, staff, and students.
