The University of Connecticut’s Department of Journalism is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position in environmental journalism at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

The Journalism Department has a news-editorial focus, preparing students to become intelligent, responsible and articulate journalists across a variety of platforms. It is an undergraduate program committed to the belief that the best journalism education combines a strong professional program with a thorough liberal arts education. Many of our students complete a major in a second field that serves to inform their reporting. The department is the only ACEJMC accredited program in New England. It was last reaccredited in 2015. Our program is located on the Storrs campus. The department has eight faculty members and 200 journalism majors and pre-majors.
The successful candidate will have strong journalism credentials, including significant publication in print, digital and/or broadcast news media concerning the environment. He or she will be expected to teach environmental journalism and other courses, advise students, publish journalism or works about journalism at a national or international level, and perform appropriate service within and outside the university. The successful candidate will welcome opportunities to work with faculty members from other departments that focus on the environment.
Our department is committed to the belief that diversity is an essential component of responsible journalism. To a journalist, diversity includes the many ways in which people differ, such as race, ethnicity, poverty, language, physical and mental health, appearance, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, education and political views. Our goal is to graduate diverse students who are able to “hear, understand and tell the stories of people” who are unlike them. The successful candidate will embrace and broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their publication, teaching, and/or public engagement the importance of diversity in journalism; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
A master’s degree in journalism or a related field; at least 10 years of professional journalism experience with a quality regional or national news organization including significant publication in the field of environmental journalism; and a deep commitment to the importance of diversity in journalism.
Some teaching at the college level; demonstrated ability to work across several platforms (print, digital, broadcast, social media, etc.); a history of significant involvement in professional organizations, particularly those related to environmental journalism; a distinguished record of publication, including extensive publication in environmental journalism; and the ability to contribute through publication, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.
This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 2017. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. University faculty may be asked to teach at one of the regional campuses as part of their regular workload. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
