The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong. It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees. It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,300. The total consolidated expenditure budget of the University is close to HK$7 billion (US$900 million) per year.


Research Assistant Professor in FRP Structures

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering enjoys a high international reputation in research on the structural use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in civil engineering and has well-established connections with industry partners and government agencies in Hong Kong and overseas. The Department, together with the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development, which is a university-wide research institute established for developing innovative solutions for sustainable high-density cities by capitalizing on the living laboratory of Hong Kong's urban environment and the multidisciplinary expertise of PolyU, are seeking a highly motivated individual with a PhD degree with research expertise in FRP structures. The new appointee will add to the existing research strengths in sustainable materials and infrastructure of the Department and the Institute.

The appointee will be required to (a) initiate, lead and participate in research activities in the area of FRP structures, particularly within the context of sustainable infrastructure development in costal, marine and other corrosive environments; (b) teach relevant subjects at various levels; (c) supervise student projects and theses; and (d) undertake relevant administrative duties.

Applicants should (a) have a PhD degree in Structural Engineering with a first degree in Civil Engineering; (b) have a strong record of research and scholarship in the area of FRP structures, with extensive experience in advanced numerical modelling of concrete structures reinforced/strengthened with FRP composites; (c) be able to conduct effective classroom teaching; and (d) have demonstrated excellent potential for developing a successful academic career.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service

The remuneration package is the same as an Assistant Professor post. A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract for one year. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
