The University of Oregon Department of Economics invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position to begin Fall 2018. We seek candidates who demonstrate potential for outstanding research and teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. We are interested in candidates whose research lies at the intersection of social equity and big data, broadly defined, including applications to public economics, education, health, labor, development, and industrial organization, as well as other fields. The required Ph.D. in economics, or related field, must be complete by September 15, 2018. Successful candidates will support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.

The advertised position is part of a cluster hire in the College of Arts and Sciences, which, in turn, is part of a presidential initiative to establish excellence in data science at the University of Oregon (see The cluster includes lines dedicated to the college’s economics program and geography program, and is intended to expand and complement existing expertise in modern empirical methods and recent data science advances, and to direct these tools toward the analysis of questions related to social equity and to understanding the determinants and consequences of inequality. These cluster hires will be supported by a strong network of current scholars at the University of Oregon who study social equity issues, as well as by necessary technical infrastructure, including the High Performance Computing Research Core Facility – a supercomputing cluster with extensive computational and data storage capacity, designed to support the needs of computation- and data-intensive research.
