San Francisco State University (SF State), Department of Computer Science seeks applicants for two tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor positions, in database systems, data analytics/big data, social networking/collaboration, and computer science education; applicants in other areas also encouraged. Position starts August 2018. Our department serves 1500 majors (approx. 100 at the graduate level) and has 11 full time faculty and several long-term lecturers. We offer BS and MS degrees in CS, and a graduate certificate in Software Engineering.

We maintain a supportive learning environment for a diverse student body. Initiatives such as PINC ( and SFCALL ( aim to broaden participation in computing. Our faculty balance teaching and research, and maintain excellent publication records. We have research and educational projects funded by NSF and NIH, collaborate with major universities such as UCSF and Stanford, and with local industry affiliates (GE Digital, Mozilla, Genentech, etc). MS students are required to complete a thesis project; this supports basic and applied research. Associated with our Department is SF State’s Center for Computing for Life Sciences ( Our up-to-date lab facilities, including a multi-GPU server and access to Amazon and IBM’s Cloud Computing services, support our computing needs.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or equivalent and a strong background in one or more areas specified above. They must demonstrate the ability to teach courses in the areas of their specialties, as well as a range of courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and to mentor students in MS projects. Candidates must have an active record of scholarship related to their specialty area, and external support or the potential for external funding of these activities. Industrial and practical experience, a track record in applied research, post-doc experience, as well as teaching and/or research with a large, diverse student body are preferred.

The position requires teaching in the CS curriculum, mentoring and advising students, developing an active research program, attracting external research funding, and ongoing service assignments.
