Position Description:

The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) and Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawaii invite applications for two tenure-track assistant-level faculty positions.  One of the positions will be at the IfA and the other position will be in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  The candidates will be evaluated by a joint committee of the two units.  Candidates in the field of cosmology will be given preference, where the committee will take a broad view of the term cosmology to include a wide range of astrophysics.  The committee especially welcomes candidates that could help strengthen the linkage between the IfA and the Physics and Astronomy programs.  Applications are encouraged equally from individuals with observational, experimental, and theoretical backgrounds.

Applicants should have an outstanding research record, an ability to lead a research program involving students and postdocs, and an ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Duties include undertaking a program of independent research, the teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses, and contributions to the academic and scientific life of the IfA and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The anticipated start date is Fall 2018.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics or closely related areas as well as successful research experience as demonstrated by accomplishments, publications and letters of recommendation. At least two years of post-doctoral research are desirable but not essential. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The IfA is also the lead institution operating the Pan-STARRS wide-field optical telescopes. More information about the IfA is available at http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has a strong experimental program in astrophysics (cosmic rays, neutrinos, dark matter) and high-energy physics (b meson physics, instrumentation and neutrinos) and a vigorous theory program in high-energy physics. More information about the Department of Physics and Astronomy can be found at http://www.phys.hawaii.edu.
