Position Announcement

Accounting- Lecturer/Senior Lecturer or Assistant/Associate Professor of the Practice

SC Johnson College of Business Cornell University

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University seeks an accounting Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Professor of Practice for a three year (Lecturer) or five year (Senior Lecturer/Professor of Practice) appointment with the expectation of renewal.  Renewal is contingent upon performance reviews, the ongoing need for the position, and the availability of funding.

The intended placement is in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, one of the three schools under the newly established Cornell SC Johnson College of Business as well as a unit within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The school houses a top-ranked undergraduate business program as well as highly regarded graduate programs that award Ph.D., M.S. and M.P.S. degrees. Areas of faculty research include environmental, energy and resource economics, food and agricultural economics, international and development economics, and various management fields.

The position will also be within the College-wide Area of Accounting, a community of 21 faculty (of which 13 are tenure track) spanning Dyson, the School of Hotel Administration, and the Johnson Graduate School of Management. The Area provides a broad scholarly community with a vibrant intellectual life, including regular seminars, a prominent annual research boot camp, and opportunities to teach across the curriculum, from undergraduate through MBA and PhD courses, on the Ithaca and New York City campuses, as well as in executive education programs and our Beijing MBA program with Tsinghau University.

The Dyson School’s B.S. degree in Applied Economics and Management (AEM) is Cornell’s AACSB-accredited undergraduate general business degree. With approximately 700 AEM majors, Dyson is one of the smallest 4-year undergraduate business programs in the U.S., and one of the most highly selective and highly ranked. Of the School’s 450 upper-level students, roughly 20% specialize in accounting. The College has recently launched a one year MPS in Management with an Accounting specialization that attracts very high quality students and is jointly administered across the three schools.

Position overview:  The position requires at least a master’s degree in accounting or business administration with a concentration in accounting, with a terminal (i.e., doctorate) degree in accounting, or a closely related field, preferred (see below for specific qualifications).  The Dyson School is seeking individuals who are committed to teaching excellence and who have an established scholarly record consistent with AACSB standards for a Scholarly Academic (SA) or Scholarly Practitioner (SP).  In addition to teaching and research successful candidates will be expected to advise undergraduate students and/or Master’s candidates, as well as participate in Area, School and College service.  This position is a non-tenure-stream position with a career track path of Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, or Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of the Practice.   This is an ideal position for someone who has training and research experience but who prefers to focus on teaching without the pressure of research expectations tied to tenure.

The person in this position will teach up to five courses per year, including at least one large introductory class, with enrollment of 250 students, and up to three upper level or graduate classes.  Teaching assignments may change to meet the needs of the curriculum, as determined by School and College leadership.  This is an academic-year (i.e., 9 month) appointment.

Qualifications:  The minimum qualification for this position includes a master’s degree in accounting or business administration with a concentration in accounting, or a closely related field.  The preferred qualification for the positions consists of an advanced terminal degree in accounting (Ph.D.), or closely related field (DBA, JD/LL.M.) from an AACSB or ABA accredited school.  All applicants should have substantive prior teaching experience, as demonstrated through course evaluations.  The successful applicant will also will be expected to maintain current AACSB (2013) standards for a scholarly academic (SA) or scholarly practitioner (SP), depending on their qualifications.  For those candidates holding a master’s degree only, industry experience, in an accounting firm or company, and professional certification as a CPA are required.  For those candidates holding an advanced terminal degree, preference will be given to candidates with professional experience in accounting and certification as a CPA, CMA, CIA, and/or CISA.
