Stanford has been involved in a major remaking of introductory general education.  The University launched the COLLEGE program as a first-year requirement. You can read about its offerings here:

The Program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) seeks to hire a lecturer who in addition to teaching two sections (one preparation) in one quarter of our COLLEGE course “Preventing Human Extinction,” would teach courses in STS and assist with developing and mounting our capstone requirement. The normal load of a lecturer is the equivalent of 6 courses. (One course may be replaced by administration, curriculum development, or other similar work.)

This appointment will be for three years, with a possibility of renewal. Candidates should have a PhD in science & technology studies or a closely related field, such as sociology, history, anthropology, or media studies of science and/or technology. Successful candidates will have a PhD in hand no later than July 1, 2023. The position will begin on August 1, 2023 and the successful hire will be expected to attend the COLLEGE training program in August 2023.

Please submit the following materials online:

·      A cover letter that addresses your qualifications including:

o   demonstrated excellence in teaching, especially first-year students;

o   relevant research and teaching related to classes in the COLLEGE curriculum;

o   any evidence of intellectual flexibility to teach in a general education curriculum that is interdisciplinary;

o   an indication of what other classes you would be prepared to teach.

·       Curriculum vitae;

·      Course evaluations (at least two);

·       Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which speaks to your teaching. Letters shall be uploaded by the referees directly via AJO.

The salary range for this position is $84-86K for 2023-24. Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.
