Description
The Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy at Caltech will offer one or more postdoctoral scholarships in time domain astronomy. Active research projects include:- Transient studies with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF)
- Infrared transient and variable searches with the ongoing Palomar Gattini-IR survey and upcoming Widefield INfrared Transient ExploreR (WINTER) survey and upcoming Cryoscope
- Machine learning and astroinformatics, including work connected with jointly querying ZTF and Rubin data streams and developing software infrastructure enabling multi-messenger discovery. There are also research opportunities as part of the NSF-funded HDR Accelerated AI Algorithms for Data-Driven Discovery Institute (https://a3d3.ai)
- Science preparation and planning for the NASA MIDEX mission, The Ultraviolet Explorer (UVEX, currently in phase B; planned launch is 2030. Includes simulations, tool development and preparatory science observations
- Systematic studies of AGN variability focusing on extreme transient phenomena in accretion disks and supermassive black hole binaries
- Data mining of extensive light curve archives for populations studies of variable phenomena

Salary range: $70,264 - $75,000
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, qualifications, skills, education, specialty, training, and internal equity.
