INTRODUCTION

The Department of Allied Health Sciences, in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources at the University of Connecticut, invites applications for a faculty appointment as Lecturer. This is a full-time, 11-month, non-tenure track appointment with a target start date of August 23, 2022. The position comes with a competitive salary and benefits package and is renewable annually based on satisfactory performance.

The Department of Allied Health Sciences has a vibrant, multidisciplinary faculty dedicated to advancing knowledge through research, teaching, advising, and community engagement. The Department has been in a period of expansion, adding new faculty in recent years to meet growing student needs. The Department embarked on an initiative and is now offering the Allied Health Sciences major on UConn’s regional Waterbury campus. With more than 30 faculty, 750 undergraduates (40% of whom are non-white), 30 post-baccalaureate students, and 30 graduate students, we actively engage in educating and training the next generation of health professionals and scientists. The Department offers an undergraduate major in Allied Health Sciences with multiple concentrations; three nationally-accredited professional programs (Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Diagnostic Genetic Sciences); four post-baccalaureate programs (Diagnostic Genetic Sciences, Dietetic Internship, Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Occupational Safety & Health), two master’s programs (Health Promotion Sciences, Health Care Genetics); and a Ph.D. program in Health Promotion Sciences. Department faculty conduct grant-funded research in obesity, HIV/AIDS, digital health, nutrition, food policy, health disparities, cancer and cardiovascular disease prevention, women’s health, big data and research methodologies, and public/community-engaged health. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

As Lecturer/Advisor, the successful candidate will:

  • Teach undergraduate courses each semester as assigned
  • Provide comprehensive academic advising for undergraduate Allied Health Sciences majors as it pertains to formulating career goals and planning academic coursework
  • Maintain an assigned caseload of advisees and be a resource to students who are exploring a health career
  • Participate in the Department’s recruitment and orientation of new students, which may include occasional weekend/evening hours
  • Serve as a resource and maintain cooperative relationships with Department faculty and staff, and other University offices, making referrals as appropriate
  • Participate in an active program of professional development consistent with personal and professional goals
  • Serve on Department, College, and/or University committees
  • Perform other duties as assigned

The successful candidate will also be expected to support the Department’s efforts to:

  • Recruit and retain students from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented groups
  • Demonstrate through teaching and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience
  • Help develop student competency in addressing cultural, structural/systemic, and environmental factors that influence health
  • Demonstrate leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests
  • Have the potential to make contributions to the educational experiences of students in the Dietetics program

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s degree in a health-related field or in higher education
  2. Professional experience in a health-related field or in higher education
  3. College-level teaching experience as an instructor of record
  4. Demonstrated excellence in oral, written, and interpersonal skills
  5. Ability and willingness to travel occasionally to UConn’s regional campus

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Terminal degree in a health-related field or higher education
  2. Two years’ work experience in a health-related field
  3. Experience in an advising or mentoring capacity in healthcare or higher education
  4. Clinical and educational experience in nutrition and dietetics
  5. Ability to build upon and/or expand the diverse curriculum within the Department of Allied Health Sciences
  6. Experience in understanding and contributing to cultures of inclusive excellence.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This 11-month appointment as Lecturer (non-tenure track) has an anticipated start date of August 23, 2022, with a primary academic appointment at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
